Title: Playmobil City International Airport Fire Department's new custom FOAM TENDER.
Post by: Bill Blackhurst on July 12, 2009, 05:16:32
The following custom is the most recent addition to the Playmobil City International Airport Fire Department. It is based on a 3526 fire engine that has been customized with an on board foam injection system. It is known as the custom FOAM TENDER. All Playmobil apparatus are designed with pump, & roll capability, meaning all apparatus can engage, & pump water or foam concentrate while moving, & all fire trucks are all wheel drive, or 4WD. The first pictures show the vehicle before the addition of the on board foam injection system. The 2 water monitor, cannons are preconnected, & are able to be maneuvered by remote control from inside the cab or manually by personnel when the vehicle is in a stationary position. The yellow tank on top of the compartment bed is the foam tank, & the 2 yellow jerry cans are an additional foam supply that is available to refill the tank. The large red water tank is designed with the foam injector built into its design, & operates separate from the pump, & the 3000 gallon water tank that comes as standard equipment on these fire engines. This truck was obtained with the large original hose reels in poor condition, so 2 custom dual hose reels were designed to replace the originals. Each hose reel can operate separate from the other as shown. The hose reels used in the custom design were made from 2 old style hose reels that were available in the same time as the fire engines, so the color matches the engines. There was a custom support rod, with end plugs to lock the rod into place. There were hose connectors designed to attach the hose on to the reel, but not interfere with the rotation of the new reels. I hope you like the newest addition to the PCIAFD, & its added customizations!

That's a very smart and clever bit of custom work, Bill, and looks just the job.  The new hose reel system is very neatly done and could be original Playmo.  The use of the child's trailer tank for the foam concentrate is a great bit of lateral thinking and I like the way you've used plastic fasteners to fit the distributor to the rail.  It blends in perfectly; in fact, I had to look long and hard before I could work out what you'd done.

Another wonderful job Bill! I couldn't tell it was not original, I think the test of a good conversion is that it appears so logical and natural and yours certainly fits the bill (as it were). I could not quite make out what you are holding in your left hand, is that a mask or camera? I certainly understand why that model is so popular! Thanks for the pictures. :wow:

Thank you everyone for the positive reviews regarding this latest project! It is greatly appreciated! I'm working on additional photo stories that I will be posting on the boards in the future. I hope you all will like them, even though they are involving modern themes, not knights, Romans, pirates, etc.! I would like to see others photo stories also! I have seen some beautiful outdoor back ground scenery in pictures of other countries that is excellent with Klicky's, & newly purchased sets as the main subject, nothing elaborate, just simple pictures with maybe the new wedding church, or figures, & scenery! A challenge?

Bill

I'm not a great fan of modern themes, but I must say that Bill's final work that I see in the pictures, it is extremely alluring!  :wow:

Ha ha ha! Bill, I just let myself pass to the "other side"  >:D with some old modern sets ("old modern sets"  ??? ) such as the Blue Transport Truck 3476 (wishlist), Green Biplane 3246 (wishlist), Rally Car 3524, Race Car 3738, Towing Truck 3453.

As you can see, it's such a variety that would not even fit in the same scenario without a crash  ;D  and if so, I would have to call someone's Fire Department

It sounds like you've got a great start to a photo story  :)9, now go ahead, & get a couple of 3880 fire engines :yup:, & a 4221 ambulance or 2  :yup:, & you'll end up doomed like me  :0!

Oh my God....  :(o): I can't believe it...

I just have one ambulance and one  fire department truck w/ ladder from the 80's, and I'm trying to sell them in a portuguese auction... I cannot imagine to...to... to... to "give shelter" to so many trucks...

And I was feeling troubled for having so many pirate ships

I'm even afraid to have nightmares with the fire department, after seeing that picture!

Even so, one day I will try to create a rescuing scenario, using no ambulances. Just to stimulate the creativity

You know Bill, seeing that picture again started me wondering how the fire departments handle their tire situation, I can't imagine that they use recaps or do they rotate them like a standard truck fleet would using caps on the duals and bringing the drivers back? Do they use standard sidewalls or heavy duty?

Hi Gepetto!
You pose an interesting question! I can only speak for the departments I was associated with in the past. When tires were needed for any apparatus, we only used new OEM rated tires due to reliability situations with recaps. Whether they were standard or heavy duty depended on the GVW weight rating, duty, & equipment assignments. Normally they were replaced with the same rated tires as came on the apparatus from the manufacturer, unless there were modifications, or additional weight added during their service life, & then manufacturers would make any recommended changes. Steer tires are different tread than drive tires usually, so they normally can't be interchanged.

Hello Bill,

Sorry for the delay in replying. Your custom airport fire truck is amazing :wow:. I cant really find words to describe how much I like this new addition to your fleet. I like how you used the water tank of the child's tractor, I would never have thought of it myself. It looks excellent with the yellow jerry cans and boxes. Keep up the good work Bill, I am looking forward to seeing more !
