Has anyone else noticed the absolutely crazy prices that some of the Victorian sets are going for on ebay? Here are a few examples of currently active listings:
5407 Laundry (http://cgi.ebay.com/Playmobil-Victorian-Laundry-Laundromat-5407-New-w-box_W0QQitemZ320352617184QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item320352617184&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318)
5321 Yellow Bedroom (http://cgi.ebay.com/Playmobil-Victorian-Mansion-Yellow-Bedroom-5321-New_W0QQitemZ320352968524QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item320352968524&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318)
5502 Pram (http://cgi.ebay.com/Playmobil-Victorian-Nanny-Pram-Carriage-5502-New-w-box_W0QQitemZ320352622360QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item320352622360&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318)
and some ended listings:
5400, 5402, 5506 (http://cgi.ebay.com/VICTORIAN-PLAYMOBIL-OLLECTION-MIB_W0QQitemZ150332845895QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item150332845895&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318)
5402 Pumpkin Cart (http://cgi.ebay.com/Playmobil-Playmobile-5402-Victorian-Pumpkin-Cart-NIB_W0QQitemZ320348117038QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item320348117038&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318)
One expects to see high prices for the fence, car, truck, but these others are rather common sets in comparison. What's going on here? 8}
p.s. I am posting this in the General/News category rather than Shopping & Auctions because I see it as news rather than as a shopping opportunity. ;)

I don't know what all the hype about these particular sets is, but WOW :o, there sure doesn't seem to be a financial crisis when it comes to Victorian times !
-
I think for some items hard times make good hunting as people become pressed for cash and have to sell off items, but these prices do seem extreme.

yeah i don't know what to think either...
like a couple weeks ago a laundry set was $46 NIB look even better than this one...
i think theres must be a dirty thing in the auctions... i remember a few months ago a guy selling Victorian boxes with the description "complete" not even a NIB and his prices where too high... i try to sell a few extra boxes and a none reach his price and a couple didint reach half (even with my 100 positive)
i don't trust sellers like this ones... and i just keep myself out of the mess...
eBay is a wierd place, everything can happend, i couple weeks ago i get a bakery with box and instructions for 66, when i saw it a 300 a year ago... i get a beer keg yesterday for 28 and i remember once i paid 51...

I understand about selling off collections, but the bidders :o, not the sellers have driven the prices for these sets out of reason! If you look at bid quantities, it seems almost unreal that many people would be willing to bid that high on what I consider not too rare of items, unless some shilling is involved :hmm:! Oh well, who knows ????
-
it does seem a bit odd, especially as the first two items you listed were being sold by someone with only a single transaction history and that was for an unrelated fairly inexpensive item. if you look at her items for sale, however, she has some rather nice pieces up, the trawler 3551 with a current high bid of $250 being one, is that a normal price for that item. hopefully this is not a collector trying to gather some cash in our current economic slump, who will regret selling her pieces later. being an eternal optimist, perhaps this is an indicator that playmobil is a better investment than some of our financial institutions!!

Odd prices indeed, but I don't think the seller is up to anything - there are still lots of very nice sets there with no bids and very reasonable prices (for now). They're going to be packing and posting in a few days.
It's wise to be wary with new sellers, but everybody has to be new once. The basic rule for all eBay bids still holds good - if it's not worth it to you personally, don't bid for it. Maybe a couple of people want these particular sets and there was a bidding war.

I agree with you here Martin! The seller seems to be OK, even though she is new. In fact the seller genuinely seems rather modest in describing the sets and, based on what was said in the listing, seems to be doing some "spring cleaning" rather than selling off a valued collection. I did a very cursory look at the bidders on some of these auctions and I did not see anything that looked like shill bidding as most of the bidders seem to have a decent amount of feedback (though I did not go so far as to check their feedback scores or comments.) I find myself hoping that she makes a killing even though some of the prices seem high. But that's what makes auctions so great and frustrating at the same time - there can be so much price variation over time.
. . . being an eternal optimist, perhaps this is an indicator that playmobil is a better investment than some of our financial institutions!!
I think you're right about that, Kaethe! I sold some excess stuff before Christmas and did very well - mostly duplicates and clearance table items that I had accumulated over the years - they definitely turned out to be a good investment! :yup: In fact, given the current ebay interest, I need to get my act together and do some more listings!

Blimey! I wouldn't have expected to see those sets go so high, especially the one in the damaged box. :o
I feel like I'm sitting on a gold mine because I have all of the Victorian range, and almost all of it still in the original boxes. ^-^
I wouldn't want to part with any of it just yet, though.... still dreaming of the day when I will have the space to be able to set it all up together.
I have always thought of my Playmo collection as an investment, right from the very beginning. It helped me to justify the amount of money I spent on it over the years. :toot: ;)

If I got any of these Victorian sets, I couldn't bear to leave them in their boxes.
Toys can be a great investment, especially if you keep them in mint condition. My dad has a vast collection of 1950s Dinky and Corgi toys, but not alas mint - most have been repainted to make them part of his own WW2 toy army, and they've all been played with extensively.
Nostalgia is a powerful motivator, and people will pay big money to re-live their childhood memories. It does make you wonder how anybody can bear to part with their own childhood toys, as we see happening every day , but I guess it's harder to be nostalgic aged 16 than 60. It's slightly surprising that Playmobil already commands big prices, but maybe we're seeing people in their 30s and 40s who have the spare cash to invest in a hobby.
I'm also dreaming of the day when I have enough room even to play properly with the stuff I have!

Almost all of mine has been out of the box and played with too. :yup:

If I had them I would definitly had to increase my Victorian Market display - they are much to fantastic to be left in the boxes ! :o

Hi Guys
May I join in the controversy and invite you to follow my unique auction on Ebay called Easter Sunday at the Mansion after a special request of a Dutch Client who buys my sets for her pleasure and that of her Grand Daughter and suggested an Easter Theme...
I am currently working on my landscaping project and created this set for her as I know that my Victorian environment with landscaped gardens with fountains and large trees, summer pavilion by a lake and a busy road in the Hyde Park or 5th Avenue type nearby will keep me busy for months.
My previous auctions reached quite high prices too and up 500+ hits upon completion...
Proof is in the pudding...

Proof is in the pudding...
Right you are, Karim! The crazy thing about some of these recent auctions is that the sets are not especially rare or even very special (in my opinion, anyway.) Your auctions are in an entirely different realm! :yup: :)
-
Hi everyone  !!!
My auction is live and thanks to Auctiva so much better presented than the previous ones...
It is showing on Ebay worldwide under : Playmobil Victorian - Easter Sunday at the Mansion.
After the unexpected and incredible interest that my previous 13 sets created back in February, it will be interested to see what happen with this one...
A UK Seller called Britiron inspired by my creations has developped similar kind of sets but is struggling to sell as I can see most of her items being relisted which is quite strange as she definitely has some interesting items there.
If you can log on the Ebay UK site, you will see that the prices can still be very reasonable and I personaly bought one Oltimer at 26.50 pounds, a complete dining / lounge set at 2.95 pounds, a complete bathroom at 3.99 pounds so it is all in the demand and above all the presentation. Sellers who are carefully preparing their auction and think it down to the smallest detail will definitely succeed...
As I said before, proof is in the pudding.
I created that set upon request of one of my Client, a lovely Dutch Lady who insisted soooo much that I finally gave in.
I spend most of my spare time planning my outside landscape and have already bought most of the trees available on Ebay Germany - again quite reasonable - and I will mix and match 1/12th items with Playmobil items.
I remember my last auction called a Nigtingale at the Mansion had 400+ hits upon completion, let's see what happens for this one...
Have a great Sunday !!!

Another totally gorgeous set up!
I love all the little details.
From the roses hanging around the doorway, to the gilt framed picture and bust of Victoria. It's really pretty!
May I ask which set the lady in the green dress comes from? It looks like she has a bit of a pattern on her bodice which I don't recall seeing before.
-
Thank you Sylvia :wow:!!!
My little Victorian Ladies are Magic Castle's Princesses who have dropped their over skirts showing lovely colour co-ordinated details.
As far as colour matching is concerned, I worked with a Lady on dressing the windows with swag curtains in the reception rooms, gingham curtains in the kitchen and blinds in the bathroom but she retired half the way through so I had to go on a quest for a new miniaturist able to make swag curtains in the 3 inches wide x 5 inches drop required for the Playmobil Mansion windows.
I have found 2 weeks ago a new Lady who is currently making swag curtains in silk brocades carefully chosen by me - on the website of a Lady who offers silk fabric in a fabric to match small scales - in shades that will compliment the decor of the rooms.
Work in progress...

Hi Guys
I have just checked Ebay US and there is indeed a few gems like :
Playmobil Victorian Mansion Park Fence 5360 complete - let see what the final price will be
There is also an Oldtimer at a mindbogling USD 300.00 !!!
Sherlocks Indianna, Bill, Sylvia, Martin and the gang must investigate that elusive Fence that will rocket sky high as usual - I believe the last fence to go on the Ebay UK site reached 210.00 GP pounds !!!

Guys, there is a serious Playmo Victorian price soaring epidemy in the US indeed...
I just checked my auction and saw the following :
PLAYMOBIL 5402 Victorian Mansion Pumpkin Cart Pram NISB at USD 71.00 + UDS 26.50 shipping costs within the US !!! This is pure lunacy 8}!!!
And what about this one : Playmobil Victorian Magic Fantasy Spider Witch 4530 at USD 36.00 + USD 26.50 shipping costs too !!! I mean this item is featherweight 8}...
Well, since when was the Magic Fantasy Spider Witch part of the Victorian theme ? Let me see, in my new landscape you will find gardens with fountains, a summer pavillion by a lake, a busy Victorian road with an Old Timer, 2 Trucks, Street Sellers, Elegant Gents and Ladies and....a Magic Fantasy Spider Witch !!! I may start taking pictures for you Guys to spot the intruder !!! LOL
I bought a few of these items boxed in Germany for 7 Euros + 3.50 Euros shipping to the UK.
I would understand the Oldtimer, the Fence but that tiny little box worth a couple of pounds when it was still produced, I truly do not understand.
I have quite a good knowledge of what the prices were when the Theme was in production and what the German market's prices are today and I never exceed the German's market's prices when I purchase an item in the UK or abroad.
As I said before, Ebay UK can still offer incredibly cheap sets for sometimes just a couple of pounds depending on the demand and how the item is presented.
I remember buying not long ago a complete dining room set from a Seller that took the picture as if it was pitch black and in such a poor presentation...when the item came to an end I was the only bidder at 2.95 and no one came into the competition which amazed me as it was such a good bargain :yup:...
Indianna, Bill, and all my US Playmofriends, if you would like me to purchase an item for you in the UK and send it to you to the US, I will be more than happy to do so.
And please do remember that Playmobil is still producing the Victorian Theme, so watch out for the Playmobil Victorian Magic Fantasy Spider Witch

Thank you for the offer Karim, however what can be purchased for a reasonable price in Germany, Europe, & the UK will quickly change when shipping charges are added to the mix to send an item to the USA! For example; 7.00 Euros item cost + 3.50 Euros shipping to you, & then to ship the same item Royal Air Mail approximately 10.00 Euros = 20.50 Euros to me, can cause an item to escalate in price quickly unless I've made up my mind its a got to have regardless! I don't understand the Victorian theme prices currently, unless people are using their tax refunds or stimulus money for splurging!

This one is really wild:
Set 5311 Nursery which sold for $350! 8} (http://cgi.ebay.com/Playmobil-Victorian-Blue-Bunk-Nursery-5311-open-box-new_W0QQitemZ320355347025QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item320355347025&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318)

I still say something's wrong with these auctions! The prices for these items are climbing to astronomical levels only from this seller, & they are not what I consider unopened MIB perfect! Even the boxes are in rough condition, not MINT without price tags, shelf wear, etc. :hmm:! Does anyone know if their auctions are for a charity or benefit reason causing such extreme sell prices :o??

yeah, that my though as well, you know, maybe some kind of charity, church or something, people helping other with the auctions, but the seller doesn't tells anything, and that's weird...
maybe is a good bite to make some people sell some of his stuff and buy it at cheap price... I'm following a few similar auctions to see the final price and if all this misunderstandings and confusion brings something good to me :yup:

. . . Indianna, Bill, and all my US Playmofriends, if you would like me to purchase an item for you in the UK and send it to you to the US, I will be more than happy to do so. . .
Thank you for your very generous offer, Karim! Speaking for myself, though, I am currently trying to reduce my quantity of Playmobil rather than add to it, so I don't think that I shall be taking advantage of your kindness. :)
-
in december i meke my mind to get rid of my victorian and western themes, and i sold complete victorian houses, trucks, pianos, windmills, wester soldiers, houses and actually i didint make the money that i was expecting to do...
now looking at this auctions i fell chritsmas wasnt a good time to sell a good price at all...
-
Hi Indianna
USD 350.00 for the nursery set !!! Makes you wonder if Ebay should introduce a law for bidding under the influence of a "substance"...
I would understand one of these elusive Victorian Fire Truck or Postal Truck - which I missed 2 years ago when someone offered it to me for 35.00 pounds which was a steal when I have never ever seen it again.
And I would not pay 210.00 pounds for a fence as I think that this is ridiculous...
It is important to keep a sense of the reality so that it remains a pleasurable hobby.
