This is very sad news.  However, the Playmobil figures will always mean he is remembered gratefully.

Is Obi-Wan Kenobi dead?  Maybe there is some young designer at Playmobil being swayed to the darkside (ie. snap-permanently-together fantasy knight towers) and Beck, lacking a badge to the Geobra compound, needed another way to provide him/her moral support.

May he rest in peace 0) and live forever in his little plastic people  :) He was able to create such a simple joyful item which spread so much happiness to children and adults alike . Not many get this opportunity and hopefully Playmobil will never forget his vision

I'm sorry to hear this. :(

The article says he had a serious illness.
I do hope that he wasn't in pain and that he had the chance to say goodbye to his loved ones before he died.

When I was writing my reply I wondered how he would view some of the more recent developments such as the fantasy series.  Unfavourably, I felt, after all, to a child a knight doesn't need wings to be able to fly.

Sad news. We're lost a few popular people of late, Bill Frindall the BBC Test Match Special Scorer (cricket) last week is one I will miss.

79 still seems young, in this day and age.

I am saddened.
A great visionary in a child's play has gone forever. He has had a great influence on my early childhood, though he never knew me and I never met him. I was one of the many, many children that loved to play with the plastic figures and was drawn into play with them. In that way, every child he saw playing with it was somehow a bit me. And in every new voyage of make-believe I made with my favourite figures, I discovered a part of him. So we did meet. Somewhere in my playing world.

For that I am gratefull.

Now, I see my children picking up old and new klickies and sailing away into their dreams and fantasy. From time to time I catch a glimp of them and sometimes I can fly with them.

For that I am gratefull too.

Thank you, Mr. Beck, thank you for all of that.

Ouch, Sylvia.

The only upside of having a serious illness is that you usually have plenty of time to say goodbye...

Here's to life!

But seriously the memoriams posted here are all pretty sweet.  Maybe PM courtesy of Mr. Beck has driven me to invest myself in medieval studies far too seriously...

What was the medieval expression?

Here is an opportunity for playmobil to make a new commemorative set . "its business time, ohh ya business time"

Lets see First a Hans Klicky, a drafting table with tiny klickies drawn on it, then lots of micro klickies in the classic style .

Hans could live on in all our collections.

Hi PF,

here comes the official press briefing !

Hans Beck,
“father” of the PLAYMOBIL-figure, died at the age of 79

Zirndorf/Germanay – The 35th birthday of the worldwide known PLAYMOBIL-figures and play system has been clouded by the sudden death of its creator, Hans Beck. Mr. Beck has joined the company, geobra Brandstätter, in Zirndorf Nuremberg in 1958. It was then when Mr. Horst Brandstätter, owner of the company, chose the cabinetmaker from several applicants and it proved to be a lucky choice for the future of the company. For years Mr. Beck enriched the company’s assortment of kids’ toys, furniture and sports accessories made of plastics with innovative concepts as chief developer.

But he gave his masterpiece 13 years later, when he designed the first PLAYMOBIL-figures. Due to the oil crisis plastics had become very expensive at the beginning of the seventies, so Horst Brandstätter told his chief developer Hans Beck to work on a play system for kids. Whereas he was rather thinking of a set of vehicles, Hans Beck concentrated on working on a figure in the centre of the new play world, then called PLAYMOBIL. In 1974 the first three characters were presented to the buyers: a Construction Worker, an Indian and a knight. Meanwhile 2.2 billion figures have entered children’s rooms worldwide and taken kids into numerous adventures through creative role play. And the company has achieved a worldwide PLAYMOBIL turnover of 452 million Euros in 2008.

Mr. Beck’s creativity, his outstanding talent to observe kids and to put himself into their perspective and his never ending ideas have laid the basis not only for a unique play system called PLAYMOBIL, but for the success of the Brandstätter Group and above all for the wonderful play memories of kids’ generations since 1974.

Mr. Beck retired in 1998 and then lived near Lake Constance in the Southern part of Germany, where he now sadly passed away after a longer illness only a few months before his 80th birthday. He is survived by his wife and a son. Mr. Hans Beck will live forever in his figures and millions of adults and kids will remain grateful for his masterpiece: the PLAYMOBIL-figure.

I was thinking of making a commemorative pic for Just For Kl!cks home page, but I just couldn't come up with anything that would convey the appropriate atmosphere.

This scene you've described would make a great Playmobil photo (if no-one has already done it before)! :D

Thanks for the idea. :)9 Hope you don't mind if I steal it at some point. ;)

Articles and tributes abound on the internet, just do a Google search on "Hans Beck" and you'll find dozens from around the world.

Some interesting facts, and some possibly incorrect ones, being aired.

A common quote in many articles: “No horror, no superficial violence, not short-lived trends,” was Beck’s motto

I'm wondering what his definition of superficial violence was, as there's plenty of regular everyday violence depicted, but the last one, no short-lived trends, is interesting.

Space Aliens, Ghost Pirates, Winged Dragon Warriors?  Are these short-lived trends, and would Hans object?

Quote
Some of Beck's favorite Playmobil creations presented slices of history that were deemed politically incorrect, such as a group of 19th century Chinese railroad workers that was never sold in stores.

"When you're presenting a picture of a time past, you have to show all sides of it," Beck told the Christian Science Monitor in 1997. But it must be done with "Fingerspitzengefuhl," he said, employing a German word that translates as "instinctive feeling."

Interesting that not all Beck's ideas were accepted, and that Playmobil no longer feel it necessary to show all aspects of past times, but mostly just the warriors.

There is an online Guest Book http://www.legacy.com/gb/guestbookview.aspx?personId=123727022 where you can leave your own message of appreciation for his great gift to us all.

Andi has sent me a babelfish translation of the last interview Hans Beck gave to the press in December 2008.

I think it needs some tidying up before I post it or much of the meaning will be lost. I haven't much time to look at it properly this weekend, but I will try to do so early next week. :)

I wrote something there, but it wasn't shown ...
I'll leave it here, therefore. It's what I ... felt.

"It's a loss to everyone who ever played with a tiny plastic piece of thing that clicks to sit, and to pick things ...

"The amount of children he made was far beyond any family he had. A great great part of the world, way beyond Germany's borders are sad, in this day.

"May he rest in peace. May all the happiness of all the children that was a bit happier as a fruit of his work be taken in consideration, though most of us didn't ever know his name, by then.

"May he rest."

Hi,

These 6 figures were the first prototypes, the first pictures he molded out of plastic.
