Title: 5823 & 5824 - two new Blisters for the US
Post by: Martin Milner on February 07, 2008, 20:16:14
These two pictures just turned up on Playmoboard today, for the US market.

Logic tells me that we're missing some sets - 5818, 5819, 5821 and 5822.

Andi shows a new one in the other thread with the vet and colt. I already have the four figures here but they are all big favorites of mine. So I may just buy one or two more of each.

WOWOW! My kids are going to LOVE those. Seeing the Mermaids released again is amazing! I wonder when these will start being made available. My Target (I was there yesterday) still does not have any of these.

(PLUNK) into the database!

No kidding!  I got a bunch of newish Specials for "the collection" for Christmas, and I had to get 3 Mermaids, just so we'd all have one.  I like the idea of getting gladiators without having to buy the enormous expensive arena, too.

Thanks, Martin ...

I really love seeing these two (the merman and mermaid) show up again just before the release of all the wonderful new underwater sets! It looks like I'll be able to almost complete my "Atlantis Theme!"

I'M HYPERVENTILATING.

Seriously--the merman and old mermaid have been klickies I've hunted for awhile.
I also like the Nubian gladiator that came with the arena, but hate having to order more of him via DS.

OK well on second thought the gladiators are nearly exact duplicates from the arena, minus the battleaxe, but still the nubian is harder to come by.

None at Target for me yesterday, so I went down the street to Toys R Us and found them!!! There was also a new knight set I hadn't seen before 5818.

Could you possibly post a photo of the 5818 set Anne?

Nobody else has seen it yet, I can't even find it on the interweb, and Heather could add it to her database.

The previous 5815 Knight set had an Unicorn Knight and a Red Dragon Knight.

cheers, Martin

I will try....I only bought the one pack and we opened it. Here is the cardboard backing. If you want I can gather up the pieces and take a shot of them. Next time I go to the city I will see if they have another pack and get another picture.

No sooner seen than done! It looks like an exact combination of 4567 - Sir Polkadot (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4567) and 4583 - Sentry (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4583), both of which have inventories, a bonus!  I'll borrow your pic for the site, Anne, at least for the meantime.

Sorry about the size, I didn't know how else to post a picture here. I wish I had gotten both of the sets the other day. Sorry the picture isn't very good! But glad you can use it for now  :)

I wonder how many of the old Special sets Playmobil plans on "recycling" in their blister packs?

Hopefully a lot of the ones from more popular themes. There are some I would love to get my hands on for a good price.

Thanks Anne!

That pic tells us what we wanted to know, and I'd like to get a few of those too - the Sentry figure is a rare one, and I think one of the better Heraldic designs they've done. Only today I was putting together a parts order, and a few of that figure are on there.

Thanks for the tip Anne! I tried TRU today and found the mermaids, the gladiators, the knights - AND a new pirate blister 5819. Very cool! The only downside - TRU charges $3.99 for the blisters, and Target only $2.99. Typical TRU mark-up. :(

Here are images of the 5819 set as well as the front of the 5818 before it is opened.

well...
4521 Arab Warrior
4525 Trick Shooter
4527 Indian Bowman
4530 Evil Witch
I wouldn't mind having another 4550 Midnight Witch
4551 Musketeer
4555 King's Knight
4569 Wolf Tracker
and 4593 Chef (I had 2 and traded one away, and then traded away the other one having forgotten I'd traded the first one)

Not really all that many, and all from before I started collecting regularly.

Thanks for the new pictures Tim!

The pirates are interesting, but I now have enough different pirate figures  not to feel the need to seek these out, but of course if I see them over here I'll snap up a couple.

Cachalote might be interested - anyone heard from him recently? I haven't seen him posting.

There's mention over on Playmoboard of old specials/Pals being re-released in the US, such as the Karate man, can anyone confirm this?

I'm not sure if the poster is seeing new stock or just old stock back on the shelves.

I'm glad you were able to find them!  Yes I thought the price was too high, which is why I only bought one of the knight sets.  My TRU also had the pirate set but they didn't look like new pirates to me. And I didn't want to pay that much! I had to get 2 of the mermaid sets though, one for each of my girls  :D

Anne - thanks for the tip about TRU - I definitely want to find the mermaid/merking set.  Unfortunately, the TRU nearest to me (Dedham, MA) did not have any of the blister sets - in fact they had very little Playmobil at all  :'(

Target around here is pretty reliable, and now we also know (thanks to both Anne & Cap'n Henry) that the sets are a bit cheaper there so I will just have to wait until they appear on Target's shelves - hopefully soon!

:yippee:  I was able to find the 5823 and 5824 sets at Target last night!

:eh?:  One thing I noticed that is a bit odd - possibly someone has already pointed this out - the packaging for these two sets is slightly larger than for the other blister packs.  Here is a photo to show the difference (I had to overlap them a bit to fit on the scanner bed) - 5817 measures 15 cm x 15 cm (5 7/8 in x 5 7/8 in) while the 5823 is 15.5 cm wide x 16 cm high (6 1/16 in x 6 1/4 in)  On the plus side, it makes them easy to spot on the shelf!   :)

That's interesting about the packaging size change, I hadn't heard that before. I assume these blisters hang on adjustable hooks in the store, so they can still be fitted in.

This reminds me of the argument about larger paperback books.

I detest the oversized books that usually come out as first printings these days. I think they call them trade paperbacks. The idea, of course, is to have a bigger book cover on the shop shelves to catch the eye.

Where the logic falls down (and I never have had a satisfactory answer to this) is that if everyone does it (which they do), then all you get is fewer, bigger books on the shelves, as the shelves don't magically grow bigger to accommodate the bigger books.

Then once you've bought the book, the poor reader has to lug it about in a bag because it's too big to slip conveniently into a pocket, and once read it fills the home bookshelves quicker.

I hope Playmobil don't follow up with bigger Specials boxes.

Yes, both sizes could probably hang together just fine - one design feature of all of the blister packs, though, is that they can also stand on a shelf (this is how I have always seen them displayed at Target.)   The clear plastic part has two little "feet" that make it stand up quite well.  I couldn't get a good picture of the front of the package using my scanner (the clear plastic is the culprit) but if you look back at the first post in this thread where you showed the imported pix, you can see the feet bumping out at the bottom of the package:

http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=1995.0 (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=1995.0)

That would rain down chaos upon the earth!   :(o):   I think this difference in package size is probably due to the use of two different packaging facilities in order to turn out a large quantity of product in a shorter turn-around time.  It was probably not even worth mentioning the size difference, but I was very excited that I had a new piece of information to share, however insignificant it might be!   ::)

(BTW, Martin, I share your frustration with the paperback book situation - The "trade" paperbacks are not only ungainly compared to regular paperbacks but they charge twice as much for them!  >:( )
