Title: The Red Dragon I & II
Post by: deadeye dick on November 18, 2007, 22:59:15
Just finalized my Red Dragon ships... It all started with the shooner type pirate ship I bought on ebay, together with the ship I actually needed  :hmm: So, I was thinking what I could do with this ship  ??? Then the idea came to make a ship for my Red Dragon knights. The 'Red Dragon I' was born. Soon, the Red Dragon I captured one of my earlier customized ships, the 'Caribbean Queen' (http://www.deadeye.be/PLAYMOBIL/PIRATES/CarribbeanQueen/index.html), and turned it into the 'Red Dragon II'.  Be aware, you Lion Knights, because when a red glow appears to your shoreline you better start to pray  >:D

Hello, DD ...

I love your "Red Dragon" ships, but I really hated to see the demise of one of my all time favourites ... The Caribbean Queen! ...  :'(

Thanks for all the wonderful photos of the Caribbean Queen. I'll be able to remember her ...

All the best,
Richard

Those are some savage looking ships . Just on first impression i think a lot of victims would just wave ye ol white fag. although they sure are not armed very well .  I think it might be time to go loot some cannons. >:D

would it be possible to cut the head off of a dragon and mount it to the front ?

Two very nice customs, DD, although I like the second one the best.

i hope none of your red dragon sailors falls into the sea. :P
with such heavy armours, they would drown instantly. ;)
very nice job d.d.

WOW!!

Great sails.  Did you repaint the ones you had or make these from scratch?

Nice work!  Great inspiration for me as I have 3 pirate ships that have been waiting for a knights-theme conversion (Already have Swans and Gold Dragons picked).  Would appreciate if you could share some tips on creating the sails and patterns (materials, artwork, etc).

fwiw I have scanned the original decal sheets and sails from 5778, but have yet to start editing them on the computer (hmm, only have PhotoShop installed, and my last version of Corel was from years ago).  For materials I am looking at using 3M's Print to Last Paper (more like laser printable plastic/polymer sheets, which I've been using to make Playmobil Banners), and Epson's sticker paper.

Thank you everybody for the nice replies...

About the sails:
- They're PVC sails I bought in the hobby shop. This was the easy part.
- I scanned the dragon head from a red dragon shield. Also pretty easy.
- I corrected the image using paint shop pro. A bit more complex, but it took less time than the Lionheart design.
- Get it printed at a print shop where they print on some kind of plastic foil
- Cut out the print and stick it to the sails...

I used 3 different types of matrials before:
- Quickfuse sails: great to print, feels like fabric, but very expensive and hard to get in Belgium --> The Lionheart (http://www.deadeye.be/PLAYMOBIL/MEDIEVAL/The%20Lionheart/images/lh_06.jpg)
- Believe it or not: roller blinds, printed with my HP photo printer  :hmm: --> latest sail (http://www.deadeye.be/PLAYMOBIL/PIRATES/3550/images/3550_3_22.jpg)
- PVC sails --> Red Dragon (http://www.deadeye.be/PLAYMOBIL/MEDIEVAL/Red_Dragon/images/rd_21.jpg)

Depends on what you like. For plain color sails with one image I prefer PVC. For multi-color sails, I prefer Quickfuse, but since it's that expensive I use the roller blinds...

Lot of fun  :bunny:

I'm really impressed with the graphics work people are doing - bothMarty's t-shirt decals and Dick's Red Dragon sails. I know I couldn't have worked out how to create uch great customs.

DD, Thank You for sharing your artwork and technique!   :yippee:

Unfortunately I've been rather busy and a bunch of customizing projects will have to be on hold ...  :-\

Excellent ships DD! I love the way you carried the theme through to the sails. A very formidable fleet of ships for your Red Dragon knights!

I can't remember if I ever posted pix of my own custom ship for the Red Dragon Clan ???, so I am doing so now (again?). My clan is a bit more primitive than yours! :D In more ways than one - I used the longship as the basis for my custom, and my sail is of the Quickfuse variety.

Speaking of sails, that PVC you used on your ships looks great! How permanent is the printing on it?

Very nice customs, Captain Henry  :wow: I especially like the customized shields.
The printing on the sails is waterproof, but unfortunately not scratch proof :(
This is visible on the black edges, where I had to retouch with a black marker.
Though it seems that the black ink is causing this issue more than the other colors...

I'm also a big fan of QuickFuse, but it's hard to get here in Belgium and it's not 100% water proof, is it?
