:o :o :o
Wow!!! I never even knew these sets were planned for release. :D
Great to see a little bit of ethnic diversity being reintroduced to the modern Playmoworld, although I know there are some people who don't like the eyes they have used on the Chinese figures. Never imagined they'd actually create a new face print (or perhaps, mold?) so the children can have the same eyes as the parents! 8-)
Of course, to be even more realistic, there should be some mixed family groups too. ;)
I can't quite understand why they used the old leg mold on two of the children figures. Slightly spoils the overall look of the sets.
Thanks for the news, Martin! :)

Maybe they thought that you could "mix" your own, Sylvia ... ;)
Thanks for the news, Martin! :)
Ditto !!! Thanks for seeing (and sharing) this Martin !!!
All the best,
Richard

Thanks Martin,
They look great!
Hope the Asian face is a mold, and not a print.
Thanks for posting.
Best regards

Cool!
They are really great looking. Definitly a must have for all city live collectors!
Can you tell me where you got the images from? I tried our own (Dutch) DS - but no prices there :(

No images either on UK DS, although the sets are referred to under "Figures". Prices are £5.99 for each set in the UK which will probably work out as 5.99 euros.

These are great! how long has it been since we've seen a asian face in a cheap set? I'll certainly buy the first 3, might have to see about the last though...

If you click on the items on the UK site, it brings the full pictures up. The sets are numbers 7980 through 7983 in the order I posted the pics.
I like the Caucasian boy's "monster" t-shirt & baseball glove! Wonder if that'll fit an adult hand too?

Thanks for the info, Martin.

I think it should. :)
The baseball accessories look like they are the same ones found in set 5789, a US Target exclusive.
You can see a pic of that set here (http://www.playmofriends.com/forum/index.php?topic=759.msg10947#msg10947). 8-)

I've ordered the Caucasian family, have to wait and see if they arrive. Its a bit strange that you can only see the pictures when you click on them.

YEAAHHHAAAAA ASIAN FIGURES
I hope for a mould, too but i think print its cheaper and faster ??!
But the ask was how long hold the print on the face ???
many thx for the pics

although I know there are some people who don't like the eyes they have used on the Chinese figures.
In Japan and China, artistst, cartoonists, and toymakers never depict themselves as being slant-eyed, but give themselves normal eyes or even extremely round eyes.
Most Asians look more or less like white people. And, I've seen Italian and British women who looked Asiatic!
My wife who is Chinese has the outer tips of her eye slightly higher than the inner tips (I just compared her and me in a photo)(either that, or my eyes droop downward). Her eyes are otherwise horizontal. Nobody really has slanted eyes.
The slant-eyed klickie figures are kind of cute for us non-Asians, but I hope Playmobil doesn't use that set as its vanguard when it releases in China in 2008.
It would be like China releasing a toy to the US in which all the white people are fat....

Yes, they are "cute" ...
Unfortunately, whenever an attempt is made to characterize a group of people it usually results in an unflattering or unrealistic caricature that is almost certain to offend someone.
Playmobil's depiction of caucasians is also "cute," as is their rendition of Africans, East Indians, American Indians, etc.
Playmobil's Cowboys, Pirates, Firefighters and Knights are also "cute." In fact it's probably safe to say, "Playmobil is cute!"
Hopefully, most people (regardless of their ethnic heritage) will just see that Playmobil is "cute" and not be offended by a little smiling toy from Germany.
All the best,
Richard

Actually, I meant to say really cute.
Can I order the three women without the guys (or the kids)?

If you can somehow get the part numbers for the three women figures, I'm sure that you can order them from Direct Service when they become avaiable in the States.
Tim, I have found that sometimes, even when you don't have the part numbers, if you have the set number and can describe the part you want ... the Direct Service folks will help you.
All the best,
Richard

A new pricing policy! At one time it seemed that the euro price became the UK price simply by putting a £ sign in front!

UK prices really shock me, though the one quoted here is OK-ish, if not happy.
These figures don't appear available in the states yet (unless PM releases them today/tomorrow (new stuff happens at the beginning of every month). I speculate the price will be same as for the knight's family $9.99 (PM website, $7.14 from Ridgeroad Station).
With the dollar plummeting, the USA must be the Playmobil sales equivalent of India.

Back in the 80s when I used to buy RPGs and boardgames from the states, the purchase prices were also frequently £1 = $1. >:(
My brother and I were especially miffed that a small 6 sided die included in the game box would shift something from being designated purely printed material to a game for tax and duty purposes, and thus whack VAT on, even though you could buy the die loose for 10p in the games shop.

Hi Friends,
ok can say the sets cost here in germany !

I've just been on the UK site and you can only see any reference to these sets if you're logged in and search for them by part number. Was this the case before?

:(
from time to time i tend to forget that playmobil is not perfect.
i have no love for these sets.
these are not very far from the "etnische figuren" playmobil released some time ago (see picture attached).
i agree with you sylvia - mixing groups would be a nicer approach.
in "ordinary" sets - pirates as an example - there is no justification for the almost total lack of non-pink klickies.
i also agree with you richard - trying to characterize a group of people easily turns out as a poor caricature (can you imagine jewish klickies with noses?)
i don't like the way the hair is combed in the "asian" figures.
i don't like the white circles around "african" eyes (the only ones who have it).
it seems to me that this is a very poor effort from playmobil to be political correct - "um tiro no pé" to use a portuguese expression (a shot in the foot).
different skin colors - from dark brown to pale pink - would simply do the trick, as timotheos suggests.
:)

It seems so now, but that wasn't the case before the odd shutdown of Halloween I posted about.
I originally found these just by looking at the DS stuff, though the pics didn't come up unless you clicked on the item to expand it.
Yesterday I was putting together a DS order, and couldn't find them anywhere on the site - but as you say, with the set number as given above, you can (supposedly) fast order them anway. I added some to my order to test, and they came up with the correct descriptions and prices, but I didn't actually order any this time round, so I don't know if they're really available or not.
My guess is they were put up briefly, but when the links didn't work properly they took them down again for maintainance, and they'll appear again soon. Meantime they can still be DS ordered using the set numbers.
I wish the Playmobil site had a "show me everything" choice. Searching by themes means you can easily miss something. From the farm theme I ordered a dovecote for my castle, and some sheep for my shepherd (he's only got a herd of one at the moment, poor chap).

Thanks for checking things out, Martin.
I wish the site had a "display new items" option.

Maybe a stupid question, but where are they sold in Germany? I looked at the German Web site, "Bestellkatalog" >> "Figuren" but they are not listed there.

If it's the same as in the UK, you have to login as if to buy and then search on the item number.

Weirder, I can only see them if I go to Playmobil UK, "Figures" in the "Accessories" section.
The three new families are not visible until I toggle "New" under the category filter list of checkboxes. Then they appear, but without pictures.
Maybe it's a bug because I'm using Firefox for web browsing.
These sets are not yet available for Playmobil USA, apparently.
-
OMG!! I can't wait til these arrive in the US!!! These are exactly what I have been writing Playmobil about for years... some ethnic folks!!!

Hello, Hoppatussa ...
OMG!! I can't wait til these arrive in the US!!! These are exactly what I have been writing Playmobil about for years... some ethnic folks!!!
It seems as if Playmobil may have actually been reading your mail! ... :wow:
Maybe we should all ask you to put in a word or two for us, for some of the things that we would also like Zirndorf to produce ... ;)
Seriously, Hoppatussa ... I am very pleased that they made something that you wanted!
All the best,
Richard

Nop: 've been logged in and switched to new; nothing. I searched for the number (when logged in); nothing.

In Japan and China, artistst, cartoonists, and toymakers never depict themselves as being slant-eyed, but give themselves normal eyes or even extremely round eyes.
Hey, I was wrong about this. I was watching a Chinese cartoon with my kid today about the adventures of the five Olympic mascots, when out of the cartoon water bounded an hour-glass shaped heart-breaker of a lady with eyes that made Playmobil's "ethnic family" look conservative in comparison.
It was weird animation.
1) Before this I'd never seen a person in a Chinese cartoon with eyes drawn slanted like that (it was poorly drawn and out of proportion).
2) I have never (and probably will never) see an Olympic swimmer with an hourglass figure like that! That aspect was not poorly drawn!
Wow!
But, if you aren't familiar with China's five olympic mascots, count yourself spared. While in Beijing, those creatures followed me around like the Erinyes. Every toy, every advertisement, everywhere. And then, every single friend of the family gave us a gift of them. I should start my own store.

OK, maybe that IS worse than the universal shame, outrage and embarrassment caused by the unveiling of the London 2012 Olympic Logo, designed at the cost of about £1/2 million. I'm not going to insult anyone by reproducing it here. Suffice to say, since the Olympic committee couldn't bring themselves to admit it was awful, we may be stuck with it, but we can all ignore it.

China apparently held a contest for the mascot design. I'm wondering if the guy / woman who designed these got a handshake and $100 before the government turned the mascots into a billion dollar merchandising line.
You may have seen China's infamous logo. It's is supposed to be the character for "capital" (jing, as in Beijing) stylized to resemble a marathon runner. But, if you look askance at it, it resembles a kneeling coolie in a Manchu hat.
Uh, I just looked up the London logo.... hey, you guys can't... do that...

We didn't even get the pretence of a competition, the only people who got the £££ for this were the fancy design agency.
Our abomination has been likened to [censored]. with apologies to Lisa Simpson.
Tim, I'll pm you.

Hi guys,
just wanted to let you know that i received all these sets this morning from UK DS and can confirm that the chinese klicky eyes on the kids are not printed....they look like moulds. it appears that the adults faces are printed though.
whether this indicates a chinese theme in the future remains unseen but surely they would not make a mould for children in a DS only set that cannot be found on DS without searching by part number!! we shall wait and see i guess. ;)

Well... I don't like to get my hopes up either, but I'd say the likelihood of this seems quite strong given the new head mould. It would have been more economical to print the faces if the Asian family set was just planned as a one-off.
Most of us certainly would not have expected a complete Egyptian theme to be in the works for 2008, so we might be in for some even bigger surprises in 2009. :D
