For a little under 1000€ you can buy a complete cathedral.
Nice pictures, particularly of the flying buttresses and the inside pillars.

Not sure how the value stacks up with buying the pieces separately but the price would compare well to actual playmobil given the amount of building parts.
-
It's a great looking building.
I wonder though when you reach the point where there are so many custom parts that it stops being really Playmobil and becomes another product entirely? Based on Steck system obviously, but for me edging into not really Playmo territory.
-
It's not playmobil, it's playmobil compatible. It's what geobra could make if they wanted to.
I think they should bring steck back into the main line. A lot of parents complain about how difficult it is to put sys-X together and how it falls apart too easily. The solution thus far is to produce playsets with large single purpose pieces. Steck never had those problems. It didn't require tools or tiny connectors, just tabs and slots.

awesome
It should be possible to build an entire medieval town in Playmobil. That should be a guiding principle of the company.

:o
I've seen pics of that, but had no idea it's for sale. I don't like cathedrals, but it does look amazing.
I didn't really try his steck parts yet...
I would LOVE to get the many sided tower, and the large round one, for example, but it would be very expensive, cause you'd need at LEAST two (more likely three) floors, right? And it adds up.

You haven't used the parts you got last year(?) then? I recall you doing a review of several pieces.
Yes, the large round tower would need to be at least three sections high to look right, otherwise it would look more like a water tower/reservoir. Plus you need modelling skills to fix up many of the pieces to get them to sit right.
The cathedral has been around for awhile or at least something that looks like it, but I think it's only recently been available to purchase as a complete unit. I also think the original person may not be involved anymore, I thought someone else had taken over but maybe I misread that.
I'd like the cathedral but don't have the space for it, or the money really.

I did a test on the first batch, hardly a review... :P I didn't use them as in a proper building.

I don't know about a change in "owner".. You may be right, at least half the owners...
I didn't get any more parts after that second batch. Cost puts me off - like you said, it would have to be some floors worth and that gets way expensive.

Where do you get that information from?

Review sites like amazon.

Holy cow, that thing looks amazing! :o :o :o
And it's still pretty much in tune with normal Playmobil, imo. But I'm the kind of person that would use anything if it was the correct scale and if it looked right.
If I had too much money and too much time, I'd need this for my medieval city 8-)

I ordered some bits from them a couple of weeks ago (still waiting) and now I see they've just added this:
I was thinking they (I) needed something like this, maybe I will, maybe I wont at some point.

Looks great :) Just saw it on THAT site too..

Review sites like amazon.
I did a little googling for amazon reviews for playmobil and the only suitable review for a big system X set was the princess castle. There are 30 positive reviews and 11 negative reviews with only one review that had more then one line. Most complaints were about the time it takes to build. Yes, it's a large set and yes it can take 3 hours to build. When you don't read reviews in where it says it takes that long, and you hate spending time building playmobil, then read the reviews first! That one complaint about parts keep falling of is not the fault of Playmobil, but of the people who build it. System X is very solid and parts don't just fall of, in fact, once assembled it's sometimes hard to take apart!
So there's not a lot of people complaining about system X and when people complain about it falling apart they never build it properly.
-
I think there is ancedotal evidence that the biggest System X sets were very slow to construct - I think the space station was notorious? But then equally I just bought a 3666 which came with the instructions that had been ripped up because 'My Dad was so frustrated with putting it together that he ripped them up when he finished building it'. I think it's just the nature of bigger sets.

The big space station has like 300 hundred of those stupid little connectors. If anyone ever thought those are fun.. well....
The difference with Steck is that anyone can probably assemble a building with no instructions. Oh, and it's fun.
("dad" probably wasn't very.. normal. I mean, ripping the instructions when you had a hard time at it makes PERFECT sense, right!? )
Of course it will take time. And of course the more parts it has, the longer it takes. Duh, right?
If people don't wanna spend a couple of hours with their kid anyways... why have one in the first place?! ???
-
I don't have a dog in this race (I don't do buildings really) but just from what I've seen Steck seems to fit more naturally with the PM concept - it's like a natural extension of swapping hats or hairs, or fitting tools into klicky hands. System X seems like a weird addition.
-
With steck I always found it fun to build, even if it took hours. I remember the first time I put my 5300 mansion together, I had a blast. I think I was 10 yeras old at the time, and I was on my own.
System-X: no way! Actually I do think system-X buildings fall apart easily. It happens when you need to move a building in one piece.

The madness continues, now a larger one is available.

They're only making two and neither will provide reward points which seems a bit silly for such a large item.
-
Holy cow that's awesome!

Couldn't agree more.
Also, the only modern "building" that I own is the little Cafe (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=5129) and it's taking up way too much space.

And I assume shipping-cost is not included in the price shown, or is it?
Luckily for my wallet my playmo-world is mainly focused on Carribean adventures which have no need for such expensive cathedrals!
(Big sailships however :-[ )
PS: Real medieval cathedrals were also so expensive, it sometimes took centuries to complete them (and some never got the finishing touches)

;D
Shipping would be a lot I would think.
The cathedrals were also built using a lot of volunteer labour so it kept costs down and made the builds go faster. They were built for the community even if the rationale for initial funding was to increase the prestige of the Church and the local patricians.

Just found that! Impressive cathedrals - and obviously still available (well he'll just reproduce parts needed, I guess - nonetheless I'd like to know if ever someone bought a complete set!). Those new parts are spledid. But I'm not sure if they're really fitting in neatly. There're gaps gashing all over.

I have several of his pieces and they do fit properly once cleaned up. Unfortunately some require much work to fit. Hopefully future pieces will be designed to be ready to go.
