Title: Merry Mens' Feasts then and now: 6464 and 3627 compared
Post by: sbblabotw on May 02, 2016, 16:53:57: Thanks to Macruran and Tiermann :wave:, the inventory for 6464 is complete. As promised, here are the differences between it and the old version, 3627. As far as I can tell, not having both sets in my hands, they are in practical terms identical.

Is the only practical difference really the 3627 box (since DS sets are issued in bags)?

Many many DS sets closely resemble earlier 'mainstream' sets, but this must be one of the few to be largely identical. For one thing, many DS sets lack the klickies (or have fewer klickies). I wonder if 3055/3740 and 6348 (Schooner) might be another pair of candidates for comparison?

The schooner has a completely different ship hull mold from the original, but is otherwise much the same I believe. Pretty sure there was a comparison post here about it in discussion at some point.

From memory...
6348;
* Not the white hull is different but the deck-piece that fits on the hull; it has larger gun-openings in the railing, additional openings for water-removal after play in tub or pool, etc. So the deck-design is the same as the greenish shooner that came with the remote-control.
* canons are different; the barrels are arrow-shooters.
* the print on the black chest is absent.

It would be good to know (e.g. when we are asked for suggestions at the PCC) which sets have been 'reissued' as DS sets (even partially) and which have never reappeared. Perhaps I will try to make a list....

As to the 3627:6464 debate, let me add that I prefer the softer plastic of the reissued tree over the rigid old one. Nicer colour, too.

I'm afraid we only have our original one... though we got the set a couple of times more over the years on ebay, I think it was always without the box.. Though.. there is another set of instructions.. I'm ALMOST sure. Uhm. Another thing to check.

I have tried to order the monk at DS in NL using a form, but it was the only part that I did not receive. The invoice mentioned that it was not available.

DO you think they have become smarter and hold all the HOLY GRAIL items in different sets?

I think they could sell that sort of thing individually... Not everyone will pay 40 eur to get that klicky. However, if they sold the guy as parts (or better, in the regular assortment) for 5 or 6 eur (expensive klicky, right?)... I believe a lot of people WOULD buy him.. by the dozen.

Same goes for all the others. Especially the sort people want in numbers.

Oh, and parts of klickys too.. I'm not interested in more of that fat klicky (we have a couple of the old sets, and that's one too many already!). I find the torso useless for customs, and though fat black legs are nice, he is barefoot, which I never really liked... but the hair :love: I'd buy more of that hair.

Maybe Twinkle's case is an exception, since I suppose most people will want one of her (especially considering the mess with that incompatible ridiculous ugly body and the sadly incompatible pretty head).

I know they don't want money. But I can't understand it. :-\

I must sadly confess that I've debated ordering another 6464 just to get an additional monk. And, another tree - it rocks.

Post by: Tiermann on June 17, 2016, 21:16:35: When I was in Germany the first time helping set up the PCC it was definitely stated to me that they do indeed deliberately make the key item from some sets not available as a loose part except for replacements of factory errors. For instance on a dinosaur set the main dino will not be available. They seem to have loosened this up a little, like with the fallow deer set. I expected to not be able to get the deer loose off PLaymobil.de but it was available - just at a really high price compared to getting the whole set. And yes the reason is to encourage people to just buy the whole set rather than order the one or two big main parts that are in it.

Post by: Robbie on June 18, 2016, 00:15:25: I find it a little frustrating. I think the parts from set 5955 weren't available from DS either. This set featured many long out of production parts which could have been bought in bulk for future used eBay purchases.

The Gnomes of Zirndorf NEED to do more "period" themes like that. Victorian or any other period really.
