Well here it is..... my first photo story of 2007. And my first one in 2 years.

It feels good to get back into the swing of things  ;D

Thanks for the great story and wonderful photos, Dunc.

Once that jeep and trailer are available in red, it may well find itself on my shopping list. :)

Great story, great photos and I want some hot chocolate and cheese bread! ... ;)

I have a question about the headlights on your "old" Jeep, Dunc. How did you do it? They look fabulous!

I love looking at all that beautiful snow while/whilst sitting by the pool here in Virgin Islands ...
(For some reason, I seem to appreciate snow so much more when I don't have to be out in it. Must be my age, eh!) ... ;)

Thanks for some good Klicky fun and for some really splendid entertainment, Dunc!

All the best,
Richard

I think they hemispherical glass pieces, possibly from a jewel craft supplier.  It's something I've been experimenting with too.

I forgot all about those Richard. I'm surprised anyone noticed, they arent all that obvious to me anymore.

All they are is little clear rubber thingies that I forget the name of. They are used for putting onto things that sit on furniture so as to not scratch. Or, on the backs of small cabiniet doors or the like so they don't bang against walls or whatever. Sorry the name escapes me and I can't find the package.

I found them quite by accident one day at the dollar store and thought they might make good realistic headlight lenses. Not sure if I like them, but they're still there for now.

You know, craft stores and dollar stores often have surprising little items that can easily be integrated into Playmo for many various purposes.

Great story Dunc. I like the use of the photo print look, especially with the writing.

Thanks Tim. I thought a little bit of a personal touch would make it all seem like a real-ish story with some history behind it.

 :)
your stories made me remeber a car a friend of mine had 20 years ago.
last week i saw one driving through the streets of a town near my own.
i wonder if you know it - it is a haflinger  made by an austrian company called steyr-puch.
it would ride fine in snowy canada, no doubt.
thanks fot the pictures and the story and i hope you will like the haflinger.

That's kind of a neat little unit. What do they use them for? Construction? Delivery? Are they 4wd?

 :)
it is used as a jeep, with the same possibilities - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haflinger .
my friend used it to travel around from his weekend house near a lake.
it was very useful in trial-like paths (all the ones surrounding his house) and performed very well on mud and rocky surfaces.
i mostly liked its spartan look, quite different from the luxurious look-a-like, fuel eaters, glossy painted s.u.v.s.
it was fun to drive it, going to the nearest village to buy bread and milk.
if you know the mercedes-unimog trucks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unimog) consider the haflinger as a kid brother.

This will also interest you, Dunc, the Steyr Puch Pinzgauer.  These are three operated by the Isle of Mann Fire Brigade.  Note the registration number, 999; all IOM fire engines have this.

Those are cool too. they remind me of the big rallye trucks.

Yes I am familiar with Unimog, would love to own one, but they are not common here. The axles are highly coveted.

In real life, they are actually quite compact.  I'll see if I can find a photo of one alongside a normal fire engine.

Couldn't find a photo, but the fire version is 2.2m high, 5.26m long and 1.8m wide with a ground clearance of 36cm.  It carries a crew of 5, 200 gallons of water and a portable pump.  Weight is 5,000kg and payload 2,400kg.  Max speed is 120kph.

Actually Cachalote, I prefer the older type mogs. That traditional looking ones. Matchbox used to make one back in the 60's, it was a light blue with orangey yellow and removable tires.

That truck looks very cool Gordon, that's not playmo though is it?

I, too, at one time preferred the old style, but having bought one of the new style I found it grew on me.

No it's not, Dunc.  It's made in China and in the UK it's imported by a firm called Peterkin and in Germany by a firm called Dickie.  Interestingly, the original model imported into the UK didn't have the MB three-pointed star on the bonnet, but the newer version does.

There are three versions, one with an opening rear compartment which houses a hose for connection to the working trailer pump.  The second version comes with a built-in water tank and pump and the rear compartment doesn't open.  This version comes with a very detailed rescue boat and trailer.  The third version, unique to Germany, has the built-in water tank and working siren (European tatu tatu style and US), flashing blue lights and flashing headlights. All have opening lockers and doors, removeable ladder and water monitor.   I've got all three and hope to add the German version with the water pump to my collection shortly.

If you want, I can post more pics.

Yeah I agree with Richard. Sorry forgot about this post

I would like to see some more details, just because it is a neat looking truck and so close to scale - if playmo has a scale lol.
Title: Re: The New Jeep

Here they are Richard and Dunc.  The quality is good and they make quite a range of stuff in fire and rescue and city life, but not all to the same scale so not all will go with Playmobil.  Unfortunately the website of the British importer is being rebuilt and so isn't available and the German website only shows the RC range.   As well as the Unimogs I also have a nice G-Wagen in UK police, fire and ambulance livery.  I'll do a pic of that too.  The pic called pump1 shows the top of the version with the built-in water tank; the other version has chequer plating.  The yellow lining is mine and, yes, one lot needs redoing.  The British version has the legend "Fire Engine" which I've replaced with the yellow lining.  The German version has "Feuerwehr"

A couple of shots of the boat and the trailer pump now.  I plan to add a blue light to the boat.  As you can see, on the fire engine without the built-in tank, the rear shutter opens and in the storage locker is a length of hose which connects to the trailer pump.

Playmobil scale is G Scale (1/22.5)

Hello, Dunc ...

G Scale was established by LGB Nürnberg (just down the road from Zirndorf). And, as most of you may remember, LGB produced their first battery powered trains for children in sets that included Playmobil klickys!

When I get to our home in Canada this summer, I'll make some scans of those old Playmobil-LGB sets (please remind me).

Thanks for the additional photos, Gordon. I would love to see the G-Wagen, but can't imagine that it's replaced the Land Rover!

All the best,
Richard

Here are some more photos of the Peterkin range.  There's the fire version of the G-Wagen with me along side, plus the ambulance version.  I can't lay hands on the police version, but it's as the ambulance but blue and yellow battenburg.  One thing that's unusual is that the fire one has aplain red rear door and black spare wheel cover while the other two have a red and yellow striped rear door and a spare wheel colour with a warning triangle on.

Now a very nice BMW X3.  This is a custom as it came just as an estate but I fitted it with the working blue light and a length of red striping on the tailgate.  Since then, an "official" fire version has appeared with a roof light as on the G-Wagen, plus police and ambulance ones, with battenburging like the G-Wagen.  These all come with two figures in appropriate uniforms (well, the fire version has firemen in German uniforms).

All of them, Unimogs, G-Wagens and BMWs have powerful friction motors.

Interestingly, the first version like mine doesn't have the BMW badge on the nose and wheel hubs, but the later versions do, just as the first Unimog didn't have the three-pointed star but the later version did.  Were these UK versions produced without the permission of the makers originally?

These and the G-Wagens are all UK versions imported by Peterkin.  I don't recall seeing Dickie (German) versions of them.

Great vehicles, Gordon ...

Can a Klicky actually sit inside, or does it require some modification?

Also, do they ship to the US and do you have any idea of the cost in USD?

Thanks and all the best,
Richard

I know a klicky needs at least the legs removing to get in a Unimog and I haven't tried with the rest (yet).  I have them mainly for background interest and because I like them.  When I have big incidents to deal with, the Unimogs have the role of "over the border" assistance, and vice versa when they have major incidents and need help from me.

The BMW I've used as my staff car (and the G-Wagen) but I now have a Playmo custom staff car under way.

I don't know about them being in the USA, but you should be able to buy them through Amazon.com from both the UK and German Amazon sites.  When I inquired from the UK site about buying from the German one, they sent me some very helpful notes (and I must do something about this as the German Unimog and trailer pump are on offer on the German site at the moment).

Hmmm ... I was asking about modifying the vehicles, Gordon ...

It doesn't seem that a legless Klicky would have an easy time as a firefighter ... ;)

All the best,
Richard

Just to round things off, here is a photo of the police version of the G-Wagen and a view of the different rear treatments.  The police and ambulance versions are both the same (ambulance on the right) so I've taken the opportunity to show the rear interior common to all.

When I was in the toyshop last week, I noticed a Peterkin BMW Z4 which must be about Playmo scale.  I'm going to look in and take a photo with a klicky alongside it and post it in a new thread.

I've just completed a custom general purpose fire brigade tipper on a Peterkin Unimog chassis.  I had a chassis and cab spare from an aborted emergency tender custom and decided to hang on to it with the view to building a custom flatbed truck.  I had actually built the flatbed when I came across a new Peterkin set on the construction theme.  This had in it a Unimog tipper in "kommunal" orange and a G Class also in orange, as well as some figures and signs.  I decided to buy the set, keep the G Class and the Uninmog, passing the rest on to a friend in the village who works for a local playgroup.  The Unimog I then used to supply tipper body for my spare fire engine chassis and here are the results.  The load are 1:35 sacks from Britains farm series but here representing sandbags for flood defences.

The tipper mechanism operates with quite a fancy gear mechanism - see fourth photo

Now here's the G Wagen in construction livery.  A new version of it has also appeared in revised police livery of silvery with blue and yellow battenburg markings as opposed to the original white and blue and yellow.  This reflects the move over here to a silver base for policd vehicles as silver gives cars a better resale value.
