Well the planned "models in the movies" did not get enough time so I had to quickly assemble a diorama that I was more prepared for. I had a lot of the western theme already in the trailer and I just had to pull up the track in the garden the morning of the show and I was off to the event.
I showed up at 6:30, was told a carpeted room was for me and I was about to start the set up when the sponsoring toystore owner showed me the actually room for us and one other model train layout. At 7:30 we began and the show opened in 2 hours. I laid the track, water, buildings, trees and mulch. Our 3 boys showed up at 9 and put in all the details. Animals, people, wagons, war, the life of the diorama.
The show opened and we continued to set up slowly. By 10 we were happy with the results, they took off to go look at all the other things. and I knew that I could put other parents kids to work setting up more.
Now this show in this area was quite interesting to say the least. There were many models from movies, the people who made them, people that worked or do work at Lucas films (Lucas films is in the next county over), lots of full costumed star wars, RC full sized robots- R2D2, RC planes, drones, working battle ships, cars etc.... 8} 8} 8}
It was very funny and I wish I took my video camera to these event because I found it very amusing to watch a group of storm troopers standing there mesmerized by our diorama
here are a few shot my wife took

That's truly amazing, Ras
Gorgeos dio, and all that "dirt" makes it stand out even more.
Would LOVE to see the stormtroopers playmostaring ;D

Looks like a great show. He didn't want you on the carpet after all? I wonder why ;D

Very nice, Ras!
And not much time to set things up! At Playmo-exhibtions here people get a day in advance of the opening to set up their displays.
Btw, I assume you're the guy with the baseball-cap and lightgrey sweatshirt? Allways nice to get a glimpse of someone here ;)

Great set-up, Ras. Well done.

Great diorama Ras,
Don't know how you manage to set it up in 2 hours - I have a week to set up at Kirkbean and usually still don't manage to do all that I plan to.

Very nice dio, Ras, and sounds like an interesting day! I would be star struck just to meet people who worked at Lucas Films. What kind of event was it?

Chapeau!
Amazing is the speed - you must have a clear setup in your head. Please post more pics!
Cheers,

Sorry, I really never have time to take pictures and my wife snapped only a few before she left also. The diorama seems so basic and one dimensional to me as I have lots of ideas in my head how to make it better. Its like taking pictures of when one is learning how to draw, its mush for a while. I am sure the guys from the news papers and all the professionally equipped armature photographers who were there must have some beautiful shots. I only saw one or two so far and they were of the dio used as a background.
hauden_lukas, I really don't. I just see the spot, lay out a circle, I used the tarp due to thinking I would not have enough mulch, I put the tarp not square so it looked more natural, the corner looked like a good spot for the beaver project recently, then some towns, a forest, Indian village , a war, I brought no switches so I just lay ed down extra track and put some trains on it, pretend where roads would go and mulch them out, use light mulch for roads and buffalo plains and dark for everything else. 2 sweaty hours later
bb It was a IPMS (international plastic modelers society) event and the local toy shop sponsored the other half of the events center. About 2000 people showed up in 6 hours. There is a lot of film in our area. Pixar also is not far away and when my friend worked there we did playmo for them but in a diffrent way.

Makes sense pixar would be in the same area, their sound is done at skywalker ranch. I'm a huge fan of pixar, I think it would be such a fun place to work!

If you ever saw how they designed the inside of the work area you would think you landed inside a cartoon. All over the walls are the decorations from movies. Office areas are grouped together for departments and each group has a fully stocked mini bar, food everywhere, I really do not see how people get anything done in there, its more like a party than a work place

I've seen documentaries on it. It's the most awesome work place ever! They have a lego room, and they take breaks where they just go play with legos to get their creative juices going. They even showed one guy had this room off his office that you have to crawl into, and it's like some secret clubhouse a kid would make in a crawl space, and they hold meetings in there. Soooooo cool!
