I bought (and assembled) this one yesterday (sorry - my iphone's bust so no pictures yet), and I would like to ask a question to anyone who has bought it too: is it me, or is this new fort FULLY customizable?
From what I can see, it is exremely easy to make it bigger, and not just by using the official add-on. The much-maligned rocky part can easily be removed, and in it's place one can add a section of wall + the corner wall connector. The tower can then easily be removed too from the rocky corner, and used like the fort towers of old. If this is so (and forgetting the silly cannon and fisher-pricey colours), I think this is one of the best forts ever released. I like the old Bravo etc ones, but for all their old-skool glory, they were still a pain to build and (especially) to keep intact.

Good to hear, sounds like a good buy!

I cant wait for pics. Im going to pick the fort up next month for my son's birthday. Im glad PM revamped thr western theme. I did pick up the new goldmine yesrerday. I was so excited to open and assemble that i didnt take one photo.

how can you two say all these things and yet provide no pictures :hissyfit: I passed up the sets yesteday knowing that they would be more lame duck sets but now you say this
its a good thing I am going back to TRU today :P

Yes! That sounds great! :yippee: I suspected it might be customizable. And yeah, the old forts are a pain, I must say. They're more tedious than system x, any day!
-
Yes they take time but it worth it when you are done. In my opinion they look the best out of all the western fort wall building systems
-
Today I read in the newspaper that this fort is in the running to be voted best toy of the 2012 here in Belgium. A father (whose son was voting) said his kid just wouldn't stop playing with it :) There was a picture of the fort and everything.
Very cool to see PM in the newspaper over breakfast, by the way ;D

The original western steck forts are the best, so easy to expand and customise. They should have used the old system with some new parts etc instead if you ask me :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

Fort has made the TRU hot toy 2012 list as well ;D

They're not steck. ??? They're put together with these weird little clips! Very tedious getting the clips on there, and then you can't move it without everything shifting and falling apart.
-
They did come with an adapter to put the wall to a steck piece. I like the look of the old walls and was never fond of the systemX walls. I will have to see in person how this new system looks

I shouldnt have used the term steck for these you are right and my fault. I think its fair to say i got carried away. Steck was used for western houses and not for the old fort. HOWEVER ( ;D) the old system was superb, these black connectors hold very well and dont come off easily unless someone wants and apply some force and still not as an pain as the system x yellow and red thingies which are so annoying . The greatest advantage of these was the flexibility if someone wanted straight rigit walls these special connectors in teh shape of a log allowed that . Superb . Or ingenious i should say.
I have 6-7 complete western forts of that old type and a few loose parts. Superb to create a roman fort too

But you're missing the point. My point being that it is fully (or almost, anyway) customizable. I'm not crazy about the connectors, either. But they're still - I think - a better system than the old forts. I'm a huge fan of Steck like most of you. But the old forts were not Steck. They were a system that was floppier than - uh - a very floppy thing. The logs Giorginetto mentions helped a bit, but not much - especially if you wanted to move the fort around a bit. With the connectors and more rigid walls, the structure is much, much sturdier. I am very sorry I cannot post pictures, but as I said my iphone's bust and my camera's with my wife somewhere else. Some other things I wanted to mention:
PROS:
The customizability (sic?) of the fort
The new indians: AMAZING! some of the best klickies ever produced by playmobil
CONS:
I don't like the new, more realistic saddle blankets. And the rubber band that fastens them to the saddle is going to snap sooner or later.
PM is still skimping on accessories. There was only one quiver for two indians: cheapskates.
The secret door behind the rock - it doesn't fit properly. Are we sure it's the correct piece for that part?
The cannon. But oh well ... that's easily removed.
The little flip-up doors for the cannons, in the wall. Cool feature for the kids, but ... ugh.

I disagree about the old walls :) . I dont think the old walls were flimsy ??? , i admit i shouldnt have referred to them as steck btw :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[. I shall refer to them therefore as the ' original' western fort system . By using those logs i mentioned the fort would become very rigid and easy to move about, withou them the shape would be highly flexible.
I will have a good look at the new system, truth being i am so obsessed with steck and old sets i tend to be very negative towards anything new. However just by looking at the new horrible cannons and those pirate like canon ports, i mean c'on playmobil !!!! these are horrible looking :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:

Bolingsbroke, how about floppier than a dead fish? ;D Anyway, you're making me want this set so bad ad I can't afford it right now! :hissyfit: Btw, I like the new saddle rolls, I have one from another set. When I was a kid, I always used to wish they could actually use their saddle rolls, and now they can! I do agree that strap is going to break if you use it very many times, though.

I like the old forts, but am anxious to see large pics of this new one. I was thinking I would hate it, but now I'm intrigued. This new Western theme is getting more expensive each time I read a new review thread. :cowboy:

I know it. :-\ I was thinking of not buying this fort at all, and now I want at least three!

My iphone's ok now ... but I'm in another country :)

Still cant wait to see some up close pics. One thing i have noticed in the three short years i have been collecting is that if you can, get the new sets in the first year they are released. The price always goes up thd following years especially for the big sets. This fort will be at least 20 dollars higher next year.
