Title: Waiting for new purchase
Post by: Ismene on July 27, 2012, 14:26:18
This should be coming in the mail today or tomorrow: http://www.etsy.com/listing/103595591/collection-of-vintage-playmobil-geobra?image_id=353527622
Can't wait!

I mostly want the organ grinder and the pig cart (which is apparently missing the pigs). I'll probably keep the stagecoach and/or the wagon (probably both) and sell off the furniture (it's all stuff I already have and the houses are pretty much filled with furniture) and possibly the medical stuff. Looking forward to lots of sorting.

Wow that is lucky just the sort of lot you love delving through, some great interesting pieces in there and the more I look the more I see little bits which I remember having as a kid, well done  :)

Nice haul, I think They found a nice new home.

Nothing yet, which means they should come tomorrow (the post office said by tomorrow). I should have known; Denver (where the package processing center is) likes to sit on our packages for a day or two.

The seller found a few other pieces after I bought the lot that she said she would throw in: a yellow camper with a cracked roof, a couple klickies and a few other small bits, so there'll be a few surprises.

No, not Sundays, I was just up late on Friday night (Saturday morning), so my last post showed as today. They do work a full day on Saturday though.

Nothing today, which means they are officially late. Boo, I was hoping to sort everything this weekend. Looks like I'll have to wait till Monday. :(
Title: Re: Waiting for new purchase
Post by: Ismene on July 31, 2012, 03:51:57
It came! I've been cleaning and sorting for hours  8} I'm arranging them by sets/partial sets, so that I can decide what to keep, what to sell and what parts I need.

-The medical stuff has to go. It's reminding me how much I hate hospitals...
-I've decided to give the covered wagon to the gypsies to make it more European. I always thought the bassist with the earrings looks like one. He needs a wife and possibly a goat. Suggestions to make it more gypsy-esque welcome  :)
- I saw a thread here with gorgeous custom colored stagecoaches. I'm debating trying something like that, though I doubt I'll be able to make one quite so nice. At any rate, the stagecoach needs a few replacement parts before I do anything.

Post by: Pynedor on July 31, 2012, 04:42:51
Great! ;) I hope that all of the stuff turns out to be how you want it to be.

As for suggestions as to how to make the wagon more gypsy-esque, I'd say just to fill it with colourful things, particularly cloth items or gold pieces. You could also try to put some rolled up tents and small pieces of wooden furniture in it (or strapped to it), since the gypsies would probably be carrying most or all of what they own on their wagon.

It's a hodge podge. Some great pieces, some broken ones, some unidentified ones, some surprises...

Well, I have TONS of fabric scraps, as I make half my own clothes  :) Furniture is not a bad idea.

ETA: I could make them bedrolls. Haven't done that since I was a kid.

It was fun to go through. I'll have to do some part hunting though, to complete the things that really need completing.

I thought I could maybe handle a plastic hospital, but then when it actually came, I just couldn't. Bad memories.

Post by: Rhalius on August 01, 2012, 14:57:13
A doctor clicky next to an operating table is bound to cut someone during play to save them, armed pirates, soldiers and cowboys might just be using weapons to disarm and threaten others to get them to surrender.  :) They could slaughter their enemies of course, but its an option.

The doctor can't really threaten a bad liver with his scalpel and tell it to be good or he will cutt it open.  ;)

well you could change the doctors head to one of the many new facial expressions, maybe one that is similar to the " :o" would be appropriate for a surgeon  or would you prefer a doctor with a " :eh?:" look ....... just not a "" is all I ask  :P

They are from an old victorian set with various upper class clickies and their luggage, including hat boxes.

Not sure about the number though.

It is strange that this person had two though.

In the early '80s McDonalds Restaurants in the USA did a promotion where they gave some Playmobil figures away with their children's meals. It caused quite a bit of a fuss as the figures were not deemed suitable for kids under 3 and, as a result, were withdrawn soon afterwards.

One of the "free" figures was a red/white lady with umbrella and blue hat. She looked just like the one in your pic. Seems a likely source for having doubles of those pieces. :)

This is the way I got hooked on Playmobil!  As a new teacher, I bought so many Happy Meals and took the figures to school for the kids to play with.  It was down the slippery slope from there!

Probably a good thing clickies arent in happy meals anymore, saves many adult collectors the weird looks they might get when ordering a happy meal for themselves.  ;)

Besides, we can find our little friends in plenty of toystores, and I don't trust clickies enough to be put in a closed cartboard box with my food. You might just find nothing but a fat clicky that smells of fries and hamburger when you open the box.  :)

I beg to differ! And I agree with tahra!!! I love the look at the faces of the people behind the counter when they ask ''Is it for a buy of a girl?'' and I reply ''Its for me, so I'd like to have the boy klicky please''  ;D ;D ;D

Oh, no... I usually get different degrees of MAD.. Last time we went to TRU, we had like 200 euros vouchers from the 50% the month before.... Bought about 209 euros of playmobil... And the woman at the counter asked the stupid question: for how many children is this... "Just us." (was with my sister). Worse than assuming it's to wrap, is assuming it's for a boy. With that one, I FREAK. "Does HE have this one?" "Yes, WE do."

i do not get those types of responses and sometimes, in the name of humor, wish I did. The clerks usually just try to get me out of their stores as fast as possible before I start to ask questions about wheeling and dealing. The other day I just got a web order mailed to me and at the same time a sale voucher. I went to the store, returned everything, re-bought everything, used the voucher and got more playmobil. I did not even have the boxes with me, and the clerk knew I was not about to go get them or if I even had them. Lets just say my wife NEVER wants to go shopping with me.

I have plenty of excuses to get Happy-meal's but even if they came with playmobil I do not think I would support McJunkfood.

An awful lot of adults I know, including myself, sometimes order happy meals just because it's a more reasonable amount of food. ??? I never get a strange look. I didn't even get looked at funny when Chris and I went to Sonic and ordered all 15 different kinds of stuffed zoo animals they were selling.

I figure they are used to strange people. I once ordered a sundae with a cone on top. Took awhile to explain that I didn't want a separate ice cream in a cone, I just wanted a cone on my sundae.

I did something similar by putting the little goatherd boy with the German/Austrian guy (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=k3686c) from the old ice curling set. His "mum" is Snow White (http://www.playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showpart.pl?partnum=30%2014%203100) with a plain red skirt. :)

Hans doesn't look like his head is snapped in quite all the way. Hold him by the legs and push his head down a little harder, and he shouldn't pop apart so easily. I haven't had any F?gures that keep popping apart, as long as you make sure to really snap them together hard enough.

My order from the 20% off coupon is here!

The families are going to be a young'un's first klickies. I'm thinking I should get a box or make a pouch for them.
The special is the bonus item, since they ran out of farm games. Not quite sure what to do with him. He doesn't really fit with the rest of my collection...

If anyone wants more pics or info, let me know. I'm planning on spreading the openings over several days. I'm not sure what has and has not been reviewed yet.

I thought the families would be a good introduction to Playmobil, though I will probably keep the little pieces until she has learned to put away her toys properly

I guess we will find out... I'm trying to extend the fun, since I'm saving up for the FAO Victorian set, so there won't be any big purchases for awhile.

Tierman, mine looks like the one on the box. What does yours look like?
I'm not much of a pony ranch person, but the rider doesn't clash with the Victorian sets (minus the fact that she should be wearing a skirt and riding side saddle, but klickies can't ride side saddle). The horse box looks cool too. I kind of want the 4th one in the series as well.

Pynedor, thanks! I don't know how long she'll stay, but I needed something besides one of the standard avatars.
-------------------------------------
Thoughts:

Rose Gardener
:) The gardening gloves are a nice touch, and he can still hold the shears while wearing them.
:( There are a lot of pegs for roses, but very few actual roses.

St. Nick and Angel
:) St. Nick as a bishop isn't a common toy to see in the USA, so I'm glad it was available.
The angel's wings are attached to a collar, so she doesn't have a hole in her back if you want to use the klicky for something else.
:( St. Nick's hat is kind of loose, and his beard/mustache is a touch low, so that his mouth sometimes peeps over the mustache.
I prefer the old gold bracelets to these new bangles that rotate freely around the wrist.
I hate the plastic packaging. It's a pain to get open (definitely not kid friendly) and hard on box collectors.
??? St. Nick has women's shoes!

Guinea Pigs
:) Lots of guinea pigs!
:( Some have this weird indent on their heads from the molding process.

I was looking forward to finding that set eventually, but none of those seem to be very good things about it... :(

Pynedor, thanks! I don't know how long she'll stay, but I needed something besides one of the standard avatars.

Well, it's definitely better now! ;)

Also, you could probably get the title changed on this thread if you want to make it a general purchase thread for you, since it's so long already! It's up to you though of course. :)
Title: Re: Waiting for new purchase
Post by: Ismene on August 24, 2012, 08:42:00
I like the set, but it could have been a touch more polished. Having a bishop klicky is awesome though  :)

Eh, the title is generic enough, so it's fine.
---------------------------------------------
Redcoat & Pirate
:) My 4577 guard now has stiff competition for favorite klicky. The redcoat from this duo is so pretty!
:( Again, the stupid plastic packaging.
I would rather have had a second redcoat than the pirate, but oh well!

Redcoat Leader
:) His mustache is better than the other redcoat's.
:( I didn't realize this when purchasing, but his ponytail is rat tail style, which isn't as appealing or realistic as some of the other long hair styles.
Since the ponytail is so long, you have to take his hair off to remove or put back his cape.

Horse, Rider and Stable
:) Overall, a beautiful set.
:( The horse box did have a few pieces that were hard to click in, but the major problem is one piece is damaged so I can't complete the box until I contact Playmobil.
The reins seem a bit weird to me.
:prays: I would love to see more sets like this with riders with less modern clothing.

Family II
:) A good selection of accessories.
:( The image on the skateboard is scary. Not sure if the recipient will appreciate that.

Family III
:) They have a camera... of course.
:( Aside from the camera, the accessories are small and uninteresting. And there are no hats.

I actually have two of this skateboard, as one also came in 4414 - Skate Park with Halfpipe (http://playmodb.org/cgi-bin/showinv.pl?setnum=4414). The other three boards in that set are much better, still in keeping with the teenage vibe, but not creepy! I love the blue one with the flames.

I believe kids like this stuff. None of these are really scary, but funny looking.

I'm a low budget klicketer...

There's a few in the $30-$40 range listed right now, less for an incomplete set: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=playmobil+photographer&_sacat=0

Has no one reviewed it yet? I suppose I could. It's a pretty small set though, so fairly straightforward.

it is really neat to see a modern perspective on a classic set. These sets were in the 80's and 90's and were quite diffrent from today playmobil. Most of our reviews are of modern sets so its also nice to mix it up a bit  ;)
Title: Re: Waiting for new purchase
Post by: Ismene on September 17, 2012, 03:31:46
I'm not sure if I qualify as a modern perspective because the vast majority of my Playmobil (even what I buy now) is from the late 80's, early 90's. It's the modern stuff that gives me a culture shock.

Found 4247 (grave robbers?) at Tuesday Morning. So now my wise men can have 3 camels, instead of just the one. I guess the figures could be their servants or something.

ETA: So it seems the camels are a bit bigger than the old one. I didn't know they changed the mold.

Some new townsfolk...

the classroom - mostly complete - I've been wanting this set for decades.
the blue sailor boy - the sticker for the hat was peeling, so I've put it in a safe place until I figure out the best way to reglue it.

the captain - I'd like to make him more Victorian, if possible. The radio needs to go. I might need to try and find a spare head as well.
the queen - I think she has the wrong hair, but I love the color of her dress.
the magnificent lady - I hope I can find the umbrella.

A small misunderstanding...
Title: Re: Waiting for new purchase
Post by: Ismene on March 12, 2013, 12:54:56
The Take Along Theater caught my eye ages ago, but I didn't get it for a long time because it's a Take Along and as we all know, Take Alongs are useless for dioramas. However, with the Last Chance sale, I couldn't resist any longer, even if the theater itself mostly gets used as storage.

+ The cast of characters for this set is superb and ultimately my reason for getting it. My favorite is the harlequin jester figure - I would love to have a full Commedia dell'arte cast! The policeman is a close second, and even the sausage "thief" has a certain charm. The props are a good selection, though you'd probably want some Victorian or fairy tale furniture for indoors scenes. I'm not sure I quite understand the gigantesque yellow box (surprise for the policeman's birthday?).

- The downside to this set is, of course, that it's a Take Along. I would have bought it when I first saw it, if it were a realistic, historical theater. But as it is, the outside is very clunky and plain. The format also necessitates a rather narrow stage. However, as a Take Along, I think it does well. They designed it around portability. There are footholds in the back to "lock in" klickies, as well as pockets for accessories. The sound box (and the big yellow box) tuck nicely below stage. I would have loved it as a kid.

So overall, sadly a Take Along, but the best of the Take Alongs.

In this order, I also got:

6222 Bedroom Furniture - A very cute traditional style bedroom. I like the lamps and the flower details. I wish the blankets/top sheets were a different color. My major complaint though is that they took out the chamber pots!!!

6244 Lounge - An assemblage of recycled parts. I got this set simply because I don't know when we'll see more Victorian furniture, and I wanted some to fill in rooms when necessary. The couch is rather nice, but I feel a bit cheated that there are only two dining chairs.

7632 Deciduous Trees - I bought two sets. Eh, they're trees. Need I say more?

As a bonus... the multi-set girl - a nice selection of accessories. I rather like the cat box and the xylophone. But do we really need another blond princess in a pink dress? I love her dress, but I want it in blue or purple or green or mustard yellow... really any other color would do.

Couldn't resist getting this lot.  :-[

They're all in excellent condition, minus a touch of storage scent (a few days of airing out should fix that) and the ends of the kiosk sticker might need a touch of glue. Must have belonged to a collector or a very gentle child.

While I strongly dislike the "setup", I do love the figures... Didn't get it yet - besides what it is, it annoys me that there's a cardboard thing, and another blinky winky. But the klickys are gorgeous... So... who knows.  (I got the bull already...)

Oh! I was trying to figure out what a blinky winky was. The lantern is cool, but I have no need for it. The Mary and Joseph klickies are nice, and the structure is more durable than the old one, but the rest is more or less similar.

I took advantage of the Labor Day sale. I'm trying to spread out the openings over a few days. Interestingly, they threw in a (older style) fairy figure on top of the multiplay boy. You know you spent too much when they send two free gifts. The wings attach to a neck piece, so I may use her just as a lady.

I would like to get the accessories that came with the larger admiral set one day, but in the meantime, he's rather adorable.

Now a few pics of the new order (I haven't opened the rest yet).

I really love the idea of a bellhop, but I really wish the uniform were red rather than pink. The purse-like bag won't fit over the hook as shown on the box, but that's not a big deal.

The fairy was the unexpected "gift". The wings are a bit warped, but since there's no hole in the back, I can use her just as a lady. She'll need slippers or something though. She didn't come with an item number.

Ha ha, I actually ordered more reds and blues in this lot, but I'm using "openings" as a reward system to encourage myself to finish necessary projects, so I haven't gotten to them yet.

I just opened the 5110 (one of the small horse sets). Pics to follow.

I hope so too. Do work; get Playmobil.

Apologies for the bad pictures. It's kind of late.

The horse set is cute. I never thought I would be collecting horse sets, but as you can see, I now have two.
The general is a great figure, but I can't get the holster to lie properly without wedging it in with his arm. Hopefully, it will stay there after some time being wedged.
The figures in the wise men set are gorgeous! I have the older wise men as well, but I want a little troop, so that it's not three lonely dudes on a long journey. My only complaint is, of course, there's one camel between them!

Here are the F?gures from the coop.  :)

Pic 1: Definite keepers.
I'm glad to see the full skirted princess is not wearing pink, though it does seem like there's a large percentage of blonde princesses... and that crown style isn't my favorite. Her veil is silly, so I took it off.
The violist (sorry, that's too big to be a violin) is gorgeous!
The Native American lady is nice. I'll add her to my future "international" collection.
The archer is awesome, though her hairstyle seems a bit modern.
The medieval princess is beautiful, though very pink. I tried her out with the gold ringlet from an earlier figure because it looks nice on her.
The Peruvian?? woman is lovely. Again, more pink, but the orange bit is nice. It would have been a nice touch if the fruit were better shaped for the basket.

Pic 2: Most likely keepers
The ninja doesn't really fit into my collection, but I may keep him because he's a fun figure.
The viking sadly had helmet molding issues, but his shield is gorgeous. I don't have any other vikings, so I'll probably keep him.
The mermaid... honestly, I didn't plan to keep her, but she is growing on me.
The... what is this? has awesome armor. Maybe I need a historical international collection as well...
I like the dragon on the knight. I know it was necessary, but I'm slightly perturbed by his lack of hair.
The fairy has a gorgeous dress. I'm not really into fairies, but she looks cool. Is it just me or are all the F?gures fairies blonde?

Pic 3: Modern figures - I'm deciding which ones to keep and which parts to keep. The rest will probably end up with my niece.
The 1st two - They like those miniskirts, don't they? The tennis racket looks nice, but no ball?
Not too fond of the snowboarder's pants.
The handyman is cute - will probably go to niece.
I'm impressed that the rollerblades have actual wheels, at least in the front and back.
The hairdresser is nice, but not my thing.

Pic 4: What remains - Some of the weirder or more violent ones will be passed along.
The miner is well done, but again not my thing.
The police guy upsets me. I didn't like it when I saw the pics, but I had a bad gut reaction when I opened it. Doesn't help that I can't get that holster attached. I probably wouldn't have minded if he were a normal policeman, but this one just invokes too much modern day violence. Will sell or trade him.
The cowboy has great details, the boots especially. But I don't know if I'll keep him. I'm not too interested in western things.
The next two - meh, I'm deciding if they have any parts worth keeping. If not, will be sold/traded.
The astronaut is cute. I think he may end up with my niece.

Send a pic of that to playmobil - they should send you a new helmet, I think...

He IS too old for diapers. But easily fixed. And he does look great afterwards...

:)

I wasn't sure what their policy is for things not bought directly from them, but I may try that.

The baseball from the last series would work.

Definitely. I'm not sure what I have in the way of spare legs, but I'll check.

If you bought the set new, it shouldn't matter where...

No, I meant, there are TENNIS balls from playmobil...

Our snowboarder got some "space legs" - pics on my review, I think.. I can't stand those diaper legs!

I suppose you're right. I've just never tried it.

Oh really? I didn't know there was already a distinct part.

Me neither. The last pair I used to make a teenage alien (because that's what I got when I put together left over parts).

Sorry about the helmet, if I'd caught that I would have switched it out for you. If the company doesn't come through on it let me know and I will send you one. I have a few extra laying around somewhere.

No worries. I figure with all the parts you had to sort through, it's no surprise you didn't see it. I'll see what the company says.

Lovely purchases, Ismene.

Those three kings are a great set. I can never decide which 3 kings to use for my nativity scene at Christmass, because both these and the other version of them look so nice.

The tennis balls in a set of three have hugely frustrated me as a kid: how could my clickies play tennis with a set of balls?  :)

Then use both! There's no reason there has to be three wise men. The tradition comes from there being three gifts, but realistically there would have been more than three (three decked out guys traveling through the desert would be too easy a target for robbery). This year, I'll have the six wise men, some women, a couple of servants and whoever else looks like they could come from that time period. I need more camels though - only have four.

Ha ha, yeah that is problematic.

You're right... Great idea and I will definitely be using it this Christmass, if you don't mind  ;D

Here is some extra historical information regarding the wise men:

The Gospel narrative omits to mention the number of the Magi, and there is no certain tradition in this matter. Some Fathers speak of three Magi; they are very likely influenced by the number of gifts. In the Orient, tradition favours twelve. Early Christian art is no consistent witness:

a painting in the cemetery of Sts. Peter and Marcellinus shows two;
one in the Lateran Museum, three;
one in the cemetery of Domitilla, four;
a vase in the Kircher Museum, eight (Marucchi, "Eléments d'archéologie chrétienne", Paris, 1899, I 197).

They emailed me back saying they will send one, so all is well. Maybe I can find a use for the funky one. Viking artifact for a Victorian collector perhaps?

As some of you know, the old carousel was one of my 1st Playmobil sets. So I decided to get the sled version. I haven't put the stickers on because I want to make some that are less Christmasy and more 1900ish.

Fits adults and mythical creatures as well!

I ordered the re-release of the regular one for my niece, so that should be showing up soon.

The guard re-release has a nostalgic toy soldier feel. They're quite posh.

I chose the boy multi-set this time since I have the girl one. The figure is too modern for my taste, but the toy shield and sword are great.

I hadn't thought of the possibility to keep that carousel less Christmassy by not using the stickers. It looks great.

While I really do like those soldiers, it is a shame they didnt give them some nice boots or shoes for this rerelease. It would have made them perfect.

The top panels need something to cover those holes. I'm thinking victorian images.

I actually like the old-schoolness since I don't have the original set.

I've been really slacking on updating this thread.  :-[

Here's a little Victorian park I set up on my dresser. You can see the yellow DS fences (I still need to hunt down a replacement part for the beige FAO fence 'cause I broke a piece :'(), policemen (Thanks again Daniela!), and a soldier from the rerelease, as well as some older members of my collection.

It's funny that you mention that girl in the red dress: my very first clicky was a girl just like that (with black eyes instead of brown ones)!

Great sets, and nice to see your first clickie there as well.

Funny that that little girl may be older than all the other clickies there, produced at an earlier date.  :)

She's from the 3195 carousel, and she has black eyes in the set photo. I guess they must have changed her face somewhere along the way.

Rhalius, she probably is. The archive on the German Playmobil site lists that carousel set as a 1986 release, which means either the set was used or it was towards the end of its run when I got it in the early 90's. The Victorian sets were released in Germany around 1989/1990, according to the archive.

In a way its funny that the little girl has been around long enough to be adult while a new clicky with a long grey beard and glasses could just be months old.

Might be an interesting subject to toy with in a picture story now that I think of it.

It's been a while since I looked at this thread it looks as though you've been busy and made some nice buys liking the soldiers. Your park settup also looks really good  looks right for the era, I particularly like the kids palying with the dog and the little boy with his boat, I've settup something similar in my modern park also with the same boat and some ducks but, I made my pond using what looks like blue tracing paper with some rocks made out of painted air dry clay. Your carousel also looks good without stickers I remember one of our oldest sets was my sisters playgorund including a slightly newer version of that carousel, good times I love those old figures with the simple designs  :)

Why would the hand (apart form the weird shape) be of the same white plastic as the arm if they are separate molds??  ???

I've been wondering that for most of my life.  I know he's not the only klicky out there with this "disability", so there must be some simple explanation.
Title: Re: Waiting for new purchase
Post by: Tiermann on June 26, 2014, 19:51:15
Hmmm my take on it, based on how the machines work, is that for some reason the hand part didn't get molded. When the machine rotated to mold the arm around the hand, with nothing there it just filled in the cavity with more of the arm plastic. I've seen something similar before somewhere on a different klicky, so I think it's probably just what happens when the hand isn't present during molding.

That makes sense. I always thought the arm was formed before the hand, so I couldn't figure out how his hand came to be white.  :-[

Me too.... I thought they were molded separately and then the hand clicked into the wrist hole.  :-[
