Title: First (simple) custom job
Post by: Red Watch on May 17, 2012, 21:39:49
Well, we're kind of embarrassed to call this a custom job considering how little work has been involved so far. However, Mini Chief wanted it done, so it had to be........ We took a 4225 incubator and set about making it fit into a 5952 ambulance and be able to shut the back doors properly, simply a matter of shaving a small amount off one end of the locating lug on the underside, as shown below.

Mini Chief wanted this done to represent the ambulance she had her 70 mile high speed dash in about 38 hours old. So, now the inside looks like this when compared to the one straight out of the box.

Further work is going to be carried out, when we can get our hands on some oxygen cylinders they will be mounted on top of the incubator nearest to the door and painted to represent oxygen and nitrogen cylinders, might just add a couple of cylinders to the folding legs too. Apart from that we're going to try to add other items, possibly drawers/cupboard, maybe another seat and monitors & controls, both of the original crew are now in the cab, as was the case with the real one, the specialist team being in the back taking care of the baby, there should be a mobile extracorporeal membrane oxygenation circuit attached to the incubator too, for the purposes of this ambulance it'll be represented by part of the wall panel. Without the ambulance that this represents, we wouldn't be on here because we wouldn't have Mini Chief directing us, thanks to this and a specialist unit in Leicester she's alive and (literally) kicking (should that be klicking?)

The story behind this custom is very touching! And it looks great. Hopefully this custom ambulance will be able to save the lives of all the klicky babies in your collection!

Thanks both, we've just had a planning meeting, we're thinking of trying to attach an I.V. cuff with line to the side of the babys neck to represent the E.C.M.O. lines, fingers crossed the unit won't be needed much, might just cover the face of the baby with tape leaving just the eyes showing, this is what we came back from the canteen to find Mini Chief looking like, she'd coughed out the ventilator! A sign that we had a determined little fighter on our hands, it was another 5 hours before we were allowed to hold her. The Memsahib says that seeing Mini Chief playing with the unit has finally helped her to deal with everything that happened, once we get it finished photo's of it & the Chief are going to be sent to the team  at Glenfield Hospital with one huge thank you attached.

A simple custom is often the best custom, I say, and it works here very well.

Post in the wanted section about parts you need and see what comes up.
